China - Will the prosperity move inland?

China Congress Puts People First
At annual Beijing meeting, Premier Wen Jiabao announces plans to slow growth in the cities and boost development in the countryside

China has been growing incredibly fast, but all of the growth has been concentrated on the eastern seaboard and in Special Economic Zones (SEZ) like Shanghai and Shenzhen. Much of inland China has yet to see any economic benefits from China’s growth. I don’t know how Premier Wen Jiabao plans to entice corporations to move inland, but that movement is inevitable as labor prices continue to rise.

Masochists…I Mean Runners Traverse the Sahara

All I had to say after reading this article was - Why?

They ran the equivalent of two marathons a day for 111 days to become the first modern runners to cross the Sahara Desert’s grueling 4,000 miles…

Zahab was smart enough to ask the crucial question, but he obviously came up with the wrong answer.

Zahab described stopping one recent day for a bathroom break only to discover the wind was blowing so harshly that he couldn’t keep the sand out of his clothes. “And I thought to myself, ‘What the hell am I doing?”‘ he said. But Zahab kept going, as did the other two, never skipping a day. Most days the three ran a total of 44 to 50 miles.

Man sentenced to death for selling…ants?

I’ve been looking for something to sell to China, and I may have just found the answer! It’s time to export good old American fireants to China.

A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for conning people out of 3 billion yuan ($387 million) in a giant scam to breed ants, local media said on Thursday…Wang sold packages of ants to the investors for up to as much as 10,000 yuan ($1,290) when they were only worth 200 yuan

Things You Should Avoid Blogging About

“Within this essay, I will discuss the topics that bloggers should avoid writing about at all costs. These topics consist of cats, lack of blogging, commenting, future in-laws, and a day-to-day micro-view of life.”

Things You Should Avoid Blogging About

This is something that I have wondered about often as I get my blog started. I don’t have a specific topic or audience yet, so I’m not sure exactly what to post on. Luckily I have avoided all five of these fauxpas, though I have thought about the comments one, hehe. He does give a link to a decently written article about how to increase comments.

10 Techniques to Get More Comments on Your Blog

What’s the craziest thing that you have ever posted on?

Take a trip to China and fill your home with all new furniture for under $2,000!

Following up on my conversation with Nate Nelson, here’s some information about filling up your home with brand new, sweet furniture from China. There are entire cities, like Fo Shan, Long Jiang and others that do nothing but produce furniture.

If you’re planning on refurnishing your home, you can’t beat the prices in China, and if you can find a couple other people willing to get stuff on the same container that you’re shipping back, you can have an amazing vacation and get all new furniture, for the same price as buying it at RC Willey. If you have any questions, just drop me a line and I’ll get you headed in the right direction.

Welcome to Fight Club

Fight Club

Wednesday night was my second night at Fight Club. I love the informal atmosphere and how we end up staying at the Fiddler’s Elbow for 3-4 hours just yakking with whoever happens to be closest. Here’s a list of some of the people that were at Fight Club, most of whom I had a chance to talk to for at least a little bit.

I found out there that Nathan Nelson had been one of Seatability’s mentors at an entrepreneurial competition last year. I didn’t get to meet him because I was on a business trip in Asia visiting our factories in Taiwan and Vietnam, then going to Guangzhou in southern China to attend an incredibly enormous office furniture trade show. That strayed from the topic a little bit, but that show boggles my mind. Anyhow, he’s interested in going to China and filling his new house with brand new furniture (see next post). I gave him some contacts I have there where he can get some sweet prices.

I highly recommend Fight Club to anyone, though you have to know somebody in it to attend, as it is by invitation only. I just wish they were held a little more often.

Lessons from Dilbert - Random Management

I always wonder if the people I work with think about my suggestions this way. I certainly hope not, but you never know.Dilbert - Random Management

Punxsutawney Phil Connors, I thought that was you!

Bill Murray is one of my favorite comedians of all time, and I think about Groundhog Day, one of my favorite comedies, every time I see anything about Punxsutawney Phil. It’s a classic that should be watched every February 2.

Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t see shadow - CNN.com:

Oh, and I’m also glad that winter will be ending soon.

What is your favorite Bill Murray movie?

Article Syndication - Your ticket to increased site traffic

I’m trying to figure out how to broaden the range of my blog. It’s a lot more fun to write when you know people are enjoying what I’m writing about, and giving feedback through comments. I read a great article on Entrepreneur.com about how to write original articles that are then syndicated to other sites. I figured I’d give it a try on the following four websites.

I took my post on credit management and used it as my first article for widespread dissemination. On first registering for these sites, I noticed that they offer varying levels of reporting and article editing. I liked the contentdesk layout the best, but I’ll reserve judgment on how well they drive traffic to my site until I can see some data. I’ll report back in a few weeks on how much traffic they sent to derekperkins.com and seatability.com.

Don’t Let Procrastination Drag You Down

University of Calgary B-school professor Piers Steel has developed a formula to help you fight the desire to postpone important work…Don’t Let Procrastination Drag You Down:

I can’t tell you how much procrastination I have been a part of in my life. The biggest problem that I have with procrastination is falling behind. As soon as I get the slightest bit behind, I immediately begin to put off whatever task it is, and the longer I wait, the larger the pile and the less I want to finish it. It’s so much easier to let myself be distracted by whatever email or task pops up, and I justify it because it’s often a fire that needs to be put out. It’s a self-sustaining problem, because I never get ahead and I’m always putting out fires, and when it gets too intense, I get mired in the muck of indecision and end up not accomplishing any of my tasks.

The funny thing is that that same problem pops up again and again, whether related to weight loss, daily scripture reading, playing video games, and anything else that requires a sustained effort as opposed to occasional huge pushes. Everything in my life would be improved if I could just figure out how to overcome procrastination.

How do you keep yourself ahead of the game? I’d love any good ideas on how to stay afloat.
